Although I consider myself very fortunate to be where I'm at now (which I'll reveal how later) it didn't start like that. It was a long, painful process of wandering in the desert before
reaching the promised land. Frustration, thousands of dollars down the drain, months of wasted time.
Heed my warning because We don't' want you to make the same deadly mistakes everyone else does:
The Fatal 4 Mistakes When Building a Website

Most people who want to have a website have no idea where to start or what to do. So they always learn the hard way.
Fatal Mistake #1- The Incompetent Friend
The first mistake people make is was what a lot of people who don't know what to do - they ask a friend who knows a little about computers to build ther website.
One of our clients, Mary, came to us after a so-called friend gave her a FUBAR website. Her friend knew a thing or two about computers so convinced her he could build the website for a small fee.
Turns out this friend actually had no idea what to do either but he was a big know-it-all. Yeah, he might know computers but doesn't know jack about websites. Big difference! At the time Mary
thought he was an expert because he talked a big game, even though he had never built a website before. Not knowing any better, Mary let him build her site.
Well, it took him over 3 months to build it, which was time she did't have to waste. And what she got was such a disaster you couldn't even call it a website. It was unusable and worthless. But she
paid him anyway and let it go as a learning experience.
So we had to scrap her crap website and start from scratch. That abomination was unusable so Mary wasted precious time and money.
Whatever you do, don't let your friends build your website because they're not doing you any favors. He screwed Mary royally. With a friend like that, who needs enemies. Let's just say Mary and he
are no longer friends.
Fatal Mistake #2 - The Inexperienced Family Member
Here's another all-too-common mistake that'll sink your website faster than an iceberg and the Titanic.
George was one of our many clients who first entrusted a family member to build his site first. Of course we had to do some serious disaster relief on that shipwreck.
George told his sister that he needed a website. She told him she could have her son, who's taking a website class in school, build his site for free. Keep in mind that his
nephew was 12 and in middle school. But he figured he could trust him and the price was right. At least his nephew was learning to build websites so he had some "experience."
Well, junior did the best he could, and he did deliver George's website in a couple weeks. So that was a good sign. But that was where the positive ends. The website was an absolute fiasco.
George couldn't use this abortion because it didn't work.
Of course this whole mess caused a rift between George and his sister. She was upset that he didn't love the website her perfect son built for him. George blames himself for this mess. After all,
what'd he expect from a student? Didn't matter if he was 12 or 22, he was just a kid and George needed someone with real world experience.
That convinced George to only work with experienced pro's and not get involved with family members who didn't know the first thing about money-making websites.
Fatal Mistake #3 - The Ego-Bloated Design Firm
Some people know that they need to hire a professional to build their website. It might be after dealing with the first two deadly mistakes or they might do it right off the bat. However, they don't know
who to hire.
Our client Phil falls into the latter category. He knew he needed to hire an experienced professional.He had wasted too much precious time with amateurs who had never built a real website before.
He searched for local internet design companies, talked to a few and couldn't believe how expensive they were asking. $30,000 for a website. "Holy mother of $&*@!", he thought. No way he could afford that.
But one firm told him they had the top designers in town and had won numerous web design awards. But they assured him that a winning design is all it took to make money and convinced him
that he'd easily make that back because his site would look so good. Plus, he'd be the envy of his friends because he had such a sharp looking website.
Since they were the experts Phil automatically assumed they knew what they were talking about so he hired them. He paid $5,000 down to start the process. He figured he had no other choice, as this was
the only way that a real professional website was built.
Well, it took a month for them to get Phil the mockup of the site. When he showed it to us all we could do was laugh. We didn't mean to, as this was a huge waste of money for Phil, not to mention
a major pain in the rumpus, but it was so awful. Their wonderful award-winning design was a fancy, space-age, techno-arty freak fest. He had just paid for a $5,000 piece of crap and was seriously
pissed off.
When Phil came to us he asked if there was any part of this mockery-of-a-sham website that we could salvage. After all, he had just coughed up five large ones for a shipwreck so of course he wanted to
get something out of it. Unfortunately there wasn't a thing we could use. It was useless.
Fatal Mistake #4 - The Rent-a-Foreigner
Here's one that's way too typical, however maybe even more sinister than the others because it has a little bit of each of the previous fatal mistakes yet seems like a good deal.
When Karen came to us to rescue her website she had been through the wringer with a few other web designers. She heard about a place where she could hire a web designer on the cheap, and was really
excited. This was great news for her: a pro could build her site for almost nothing. She'd have her pick of designers who'd all bid on the job. It sounded too good to be true. And it was.
Numerous designers contacted Karen but the problem was that they were all foreigners who barely spoke English, mostly from 3rd-world countries. But she threw caution to the wind and hired one whose
English was better than the rest. But he took advantage of her ignorance and trust, and built a site that wasn't what she wanted.
He didn't follow instructions and was hard to get a hold of. The website was cheap in every sense of the word. It was like the Yugo of websites: low-grade, tawdry, shoddy, ugly, didn't run and ready
for the scrap heap. Another problem was that this guy wanted a lot of money to do any updates, which took too long to do. If at all. He took Karen for a ride and she paid the price.
Well, we ended up scrapping this loathsome 3rd-world, 3d-rate website. There were so many problems with this website that Karen didn't even know about. This is what's especially egregious about these
websites. There is an entire cesspool of crap hidden underneath these rent-a-foreigner websites that only a real web designer could see.
